Twitter thread of border and migration graphics

I updated my collection of data about security and migration at the border to reflect some new data releases from U.S. Customs and Border Protection and from Mexico’s Migration Policy Unit. From those, I have a collection of charts and graphics whose most current version is always downloadable as a PDF file at bit.ly/wola_border.

The number of migrants whom Border Patrol apprehended at the border in fiscal 2019 was the greatest since 2007. But in 2007 they were nearly all single adults from #Mexico. In 2019 they were 65 percent families and children, and 80 percent non-Mexican. (2/14) pic.twitter.com/iIujlU0Khu

A reminder not to expect the current decline in migration to be permanent. Numbers recovered after sharp declines in 2014 and 2017, and may do so again. Border-area seizures of low-volume, high-value illegal drugs increased from 2018 to 2019. As in the past, the vast majority are seized at ports of entry in vehicles and in people's possession—not between the ports, where Border Patrol operates and walls would be built.
